Workshop 1: Technology, Teaching, and Mental Health: Strategies for Teacher and Student Well-Being
By Salma Ali, Texas A&M University
This workshop will focus on exploring the intersection of technology, education, and mental health with the goal of promoting the well-being of both teachers and students. By addressing the ISTE standards, this workshop will begin by examining the evolving role of technology in education and how it has shaped teaching and learning experiences. It emphasizes the importance of teachers’ stress and burnout. Strategies for identifying and managing these issues will be discussed. It will also emphasize the importance of human connection within digital learning environments.
ISTE Standards Addressed: K-12 Teachers
Students 1.1 (Empowered Learner) and 1.2 (Digital citizenship).
Educators 2.1 (Learner) and 2.5 (Designer)
Workshop 2: Interacting with Data from NASA Missions through a Google Classroom-Supported Curriculum
By Christina Milotte, NASA Heliophysics Education Activation Team (HEAT)
Engage students in authentic data from some of NASA’s most innovative missions that study the Sun through a standards-based curriculum targeted at middle-school audiences. Heliophysics is the study of the Sun and its influence on the solar system. NASA Helio Club, consisting of six two-hour lessons, can be implemented as an out-of-school-time program or used as lesson plans in the classroom. The hands-on and digital activities in NASA Helio Club are connected to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and all resources are designed so that they can be integrated into Google Classroom. Google Classroom is a powerful tool that can allow educators to design individual learning experiences that meet the needs of their students. This presentation will address ISTE standard 2.5b: Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital tools and resources to maximize active, deep learning.
Target Audience: Middle School Teachers
ISTE Standard Addressed: Educators. 2.5.b (Design Authentic Learning Activities)
Workshop 3: Digital Literacy: Sparking Curiosity and Critical Thinking in Digital Learning Environments
By Gigi Mohamad, William Paterson University of New Jersey
In this digital age, it's imperative for educators and students to possess digital literacy and media fluency skills. This presentation aims to emphasize the importance of creating a learning culture that prioritizes critical examination of digital resources over mere consumption. During the presentation, we will discuss the definition of digital literacy and ways to critically analyze and evaluate information sources recognizing biases and understanding the impact of media messages.
Target Audience: All Educators
ISTE Standard Addressed: Educators 2.3.b (Evaluate Resources for Credibility)
